Protestant Cay Beach Clean Up Slated for September 26, 2010

Each year approximately 1000 dive professionals and environmentalists lead the fight against marine debris during International Coastal Cleanup Day, sponsored by Project AWARE Foundation, during the month of September. On this day, thousands of dive volunteers unite in over 100 countries for one shared cause: marine debris prevention.

Recognizing that marine debris is a serious threat to St. Croix marine life and human health,
Dive Experience and Hotel on the Cay are organizing the Protestant Cay Beach Cleanup set for
2-4 PM, Sunday, September 26, 2010.

Volunteers are needed in two categories: SCUBA divers to remove underwater debris around
Protestant Cay; Beach: remove land-based debris. Participants will receive a certificate
recognizing their contribution to this global event and are invited to enjoy refreshments at
Hotel on the Cay afterwards.

“We’ve been doing this event for ten years and have collected hundreds of pounds of debris. A
lot of debris comes into the harbor from the open ocean—we get trash from around the world”,
said Michelle Pugh, Owner of Dive Experience.

Local divers and ocean-loving volunteers are encouraged to pre-register at Dive Experience, 1111
Strand Street, Christiansted, 340/ 773-3307. The day of event bring knife, scissors, nail clippers
(fishing line removal), hat, biodegradable sunscreen, gloves, water shoes, water (not in disposal
plastic bottles). Trash bags, mesh bags, data collection cards will be provided by Project Aware
Foundation.

This event is part of the local Coastweeks and the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal
Cleanup, sponsored in part by the University of the Virgin Islands. If you have a group that
